The Vanitas paintings is a series of 10 art pieces of which 9 portraits and one still life that depict the diversity of an inviduality.
The time we have in life is short, so how do we spend it? If we look at how we want to live our life, we also look our selves. Because what we do defines us, or what defines us decides what we do. So who are we? After a period of self reflection I came to the idea that a personality is a combination of multiple characteristics, and hardly to define as one form or to be displayed in one image. I have painted these characteristics in the form of classical archetypes that all represent a part of me, but also represent parts of everyone in a certain degree.
Next to these portraits I have made a Vanitas still life, to point out that there is limited time to make these characteristics flourish.
De tijd die we hebben is maar kort, hoe besteden we die? Als we kijken naar hoe we ons leven invullen kijken we ook naar ons zelf. Want wat we doen definieert ons, of wat ons definieert bepaalt wat we doen. Wie zijn we eigenlijk? Na een periode van zelfreflectie kwam ik tot het idee dat een identiteit bestaat uit verschillende eigenschappen en niet zomaar in één beeld te vangen is maar . Deze eigenschappen heb ik weergegeven in 9 archetypes uit de klassieke kunst en staan voor de verschillende kanten van mij, maar ook van de verschillende kanten van iedereen tot bepaalde hoogte.
Naast deze portretten heb ik een stilleven gemaakt om aan te geven dat de tijd die hebben om die eigenschappen naar voren te laten komen kort is. Dus men de tijd juist moet investeren om deze tot bloei te laten komen.
VANITAS I: The Painter

I have so much fun with it now and see it as the perfect way to express my creativity. The Painter represents my urge to make something, to share my thoughts and ideas on the world and to leave something behind. Will this one go long in history?
Already this painting had an amazing adventure when it was shown at the most majestic place for art; the Rijksmuseum!

Ik haal er veel voldoening uit en zie het nu als de perfecte manier om mijn creativiteit te uiten. The Painter representeert mijn drang om iets te maken, om mijn gedachtes te delen met de wereld en iets achter te laten. Zal dit schilderij lang blijven bestaaan in de geschiedenis?
Dit schilderij heeft al een fantastisch avontuur gehad toen het hing in de meest fantastische plek voor de kunst; het Rijksmuseum!
VANITAS II: The Philosopher

Probably the biggest part of me, the forever dreamer and deep thinker. Contemplating life or just random thoughts that are drifting away. Often I can find my mind trying to makes things ‘click’. It’s both a blessing as it is a curse, much like every other aspect of life 😉
Happy to invite you all in a deep thinking session, searching for some answers or just for the fun of it. The idea of good philosophy is to practice ‘the art of thinking’ where creativity is key.
Waarschijnlijk het grootste deel van mij, de eeuwige dromer en denker. Nadenkend over het leven of gewoon wat willekeurige gedachtes die ronddrijven. Vaak vind ik mijn geest proberen dingen ‘kloppend’ te maken. Het is zegen en een vloek, zoals zoveel andere aspecten in het leven ;).
Ik nodig een ieder graag uit voor een sessie diep nadeken, zoekende naar antwoorden of gewoon voor de lol. het idee van goede filosofie is het beoefenen van de ‘kunst van het denken’ waar creativiteit de sleutel is.
VANITAS III: The Traveler

Traveling as a way to explore new ground, new people and new experiences is a big part of me. It satisfies my curiosity and sparks my urge to discover.
Through my travels I have met some amazing people and found it triggered pieces of me that where not triggered before. I also recognized parts of people that I already knew very well from my own surroundings, but finding it on the opposite side of the world was pleasantly surprising. It makes you realize that no matter how far you go, and with how many people you interact, there are always principle beliefs that we share with each other. The basics of being human is what binds us across borders and continents. We really aren’t so different after all if you look at it from a bigger picture.
The props in this painting represent my love for all the interests I share in my travels. (And the 17th century collar? Just to keep realizing that it is a luxury that we (at least some of us) can travel so far and experience those moments, let’s not take it for granted).
Reizen als een manier om nieuwe grond, nieuwe mensen en nieuwe ervaringen te ontdekken is een groot deel van mij. Het vult mijn nieuwsgierigheid en activeert mijn drijfveer om te ontdekken.
Tijdens mijn reizen heb ik een hoop fantastische mansen ontmoet en heb ik ontdekt dat het delen in mij triggert die nog niet getriggerd waren. Ik heb ook delen herkend van mijn mensen die ik ken uit mijn omgeving, maar het aan de andere kan van wereld zien was een aangename verrassing. het doet je denken dat hoe ver je ook gaat, en met hoeveel mensen je interacties hebt, dat er altijd principieel waarden zijn die we als mens. De basis die we als mens zijn, is wat ons bind over grenzen en continenten heen. We zijn allemaal niet zo verschillend als je naar het grote plaatje kijkt.
De propsities in dit schilderij representeren allemaal de verschillende interesses die ik heb tijdens mijn reizen.
(En de 17e eeuwse kraag? Om ons te laten realiseren dat het een luxe is (althans voor sommigen) dat we kunnen reizen en deze momenten kunnen delen. Laten we het niet als voor zich beschouwen.
VANITAS IV: The Officer

Painted this man here as a part of me that is in my genes. My grandfather (who I never knew unfortunately) was a policeman and member of the military police. The sword was part of his original gear and is a family heritage.
Here I am trying to be a righteous man defending my and other people’s morals and principles. Being a defender of everyone’s possibilities to share their views of the world. Off course within a safe and regulated environment. If we all get to express our ideas without judgement we might just learn that things aren’t what they seem.
Ik heb deze man hier geschilderd als iemand die deel is van genen. Mijn Opa (wie ik nooit heb gekend helaas) was een politie agent en lid van de marechaussee. Het zwaard was een onderdeel van zijn origineel uniform en is nu een erfstuk in de familie.
Hier ben ik een rechtvaardig man die de moralen en normen en waarden van mijzelf en andere beschermt. Een verdediger van ieders mogelijkheden om zijn of haar beeld op te wereld te delen. Natuurlijk alles binnen een veilige omgeving. Als we allemaal onze vrijheid hebben om ideeën te kunnen uiten zonder oordeel, zullen we misschien wel ontdekken dat dingen heel anders zijn dan we lijken.
VANITAS V: The Craftsman

For all the carpenters, builders, landscapers, gardeners, farmers, plumbers, constructors, furniture makers, electricians, watchmakers and all other craftsmen that make with their hands. For the hard work that pays off in the end when you have something made to see, touch, smell, hear or even taste. To the unique quality that comes after perfecting a skill. To the connection of the ideas in the brains and the physical outcome working with your hands.
Voor alle timmermanen, bouwers, hoveniers, boeren, loodgieters, meubel makers, elektriciens, horloge makers en alle andere vakmannen die werken met hun handen. Voor al het harde werk dat zich uiteindelijk uitbetaald in iets wat je kan aanraken, voelen, ruiken of zelfs kan proeven. De unieke kwaliteit die komt na het perfect kunnen uitoefenen van een vaardigheid. De connectie tussen een idee in de hersenen en een fysieke uitwerking in je handen.
VANITAS VI: The Scientist

For my love of trying to understand how things work, how they are made and what secrets lay hidden. I think there are similarities in science and art where one tries to figure out how life works.
In this painting the prism stands for the light and the breaking of it, so we can study how light works and what it is made of. In painting the control of the light is the ultimate goal, because that’s how one can decide what we see.
In the 18th century the scientific researches and new philosophical views created an intellectual movement that led to new world ideas, it was called the Enlightment✨
Fun fact: In the modern day film projectors a prism breaks the light and makes it possible for us to see millions of colors, so think of that the next time you sit in a movie theatre 😉🤔
Voor mijn liefde voor het proberen te begrijpen hoe dingen werken, hoe ze zijn gemaakt en wat voor geheimen er achter liggen. Ik denk dat er veel overeenkomsten zitten tussen kunst en wetenschap waar ze allebei het leven proberen te begrijpen.
In dit schilderij staat het prisma voor het licht en het breken van het licht, zodat we kunnen bestuderen hoe het licht werkt en waar het van gemaakt is. In schilderen is het kunnen controleren van het licht het ultieme doel, want daarmee bepalen we wat we kunnen laten zien.
In de 18e eeuw ontstond er door nieuwe wetenschappelijk en filosofische ontdekkingen een nieuwe stroming; het heette de verlichting. En bracht ons nieuwe doorbraken die leidde tot het leven wat we nu hebben.
Fun fact; In de moderne filmprojectoren wordt een prisma gebruikt om het licht te breken en maakt het ons mogelijk om miljoenen kleuren te zien. Denk daar maar eens over na bij je volgende bioscoopbezoek.
VANITAS VII: The Saint

Honoring true devotion, putting in the endless effort in order to achieve a higher level. Without reward or credit the saint is focused on inner achievement, a progress of the mind, body and soul.
In religious paths of many forms the core ground lies with kindness and passion, a beautiful basis that has spread much love around the world.
But I also see the duality where it blocks itself from other possible truths in the world, hence the blindfold.
The saint in me tries to be kind and caring. In meditation I try to connect with everything around me in a passive receiving state, focusing on inner balance and positive energy.
What kind of saint resonates in you?
Het eren van volledige toewijding, de eindeloze moeite met als doel een hoger niveau te behalen. Zonder daar een beloning of een iets voor terug te krijgen is de heilige geconcentreerd op een innerlijke verrijking, een proces van geest, lichaam en ziel. In vele religieuze paden is de kern goedheid, vriendelijkheid en passie, een prachtige basis die veel liefde heeft verspreid over heel de wereld.
Maar ik zie ook een dualiteit waar het zichzelf afschermt voor andere mogelijke waarheden in de wereld, vandaar de blinddoek.
De heilige in mij probeert aardig en open te zijn. In berusting probeer ik een connectie te houden met alles om me heen, op een ontvankelijke manier gefocusseerd op een innerlijke balans en positieve energie.

VANITAS VIII: The Warrior

Here I am as Sven The Art Viking ready to go to battle, my weapon of choice? My brushes and my painter stick which I use to demolish the normalized concept of this time, or just make nice pictures, not sure what to do with them yet.
Anyway many people that know me, know I love to put myself in some strains and tricky situation to struggle myself out from. In the form of fitness, running, climbing, snowboarding, surfing, (downhill) mountain biking and other things thrown at me. It is a big part of me and love doing it and brought me some amazing things, adventures and fun but mostly a strong body and mind to take on the world. I believe it is vital to keep on the go and challenge yourself, physically aaaand mentally.
And awaaaaay we go!
Hier ben ik als Sven, de kunstviking klaar voor de strijd. Mijn gekozen wapen? Mijn kwasten en verfstok waarmee ik de genormaliseerde concepten van deze tijd mee vernietig, of gewoon wat leuke plaatjes maak, nog niet helemaal zeker wat ik er mee wil doen.
In ieder geval, veel mensen die mij kunnen weten dat ik mezelf graag in allerlei lastige en zware situaties werk om mezelf af te matten. In de vorm van fitness, hardlopen, klimmen, snowbaorden, skaten, surfen, downhill mountain biken of iets anders dat op me af komt. Het is een groot deel van me en hou er van en heeft mee al veel gebracht, veel avonturen en lol maar ook een fit lichaam en geest om de wereld aan te kunnen. Ik geloof dat je jezelf moet blijven uitdagen, mentaal en fysiek!
VANITAS IX: The Dude

Appreciating the random things that life has to offer. Following my own flow and letting myself led by the sometimes surrealistic moments life can throw at us. The Dude abides and reshides in me, Dudism is the only religion I could ever follow if it not where for my own leading inner compass.
Take some time to waste a moment and let life settle in your mind, take it easy and relax and your thoughts will be able to put itself in the right place. The easy and mellow attitude that The Dude (Lebowski) has, is one to follow, let me be one of it’s apostles. 😎 Or just take as a part of me, like my other 8 friends…

Het waarderen van de willekeurige dingen des levens Ik volg mijn eigen flow en laat mezelf graag leiden door de ietwat surrealistische momenten die het leven op ons af kan gooien. The Dude regeert en leeft in mij, Dudism is de enige vorm van religie die ik ooit echt zou kunnen volgen als ik zo sterk hing aan mijn eigen innerlijke kompas.
Neem af en toe wat tijd om tijd te verspillen en laat het leven zichzelf nestelen in je hoofd, doe rustig aan laat je gedachten zich op de juiste plek landen. The relaxte en rustige houding die The Dude (Lebowksi) heeft, is er een om te volgen, ik ben dan graag zijn apostel ;).

VANITAS X: Still Life

Life goes quick, take some time to stand still and and see what is valuable.
We race down the course of life and go with the flow and suddenly we see ourselves standing still at a point and wondering what’s all going on.
I had that a couple of years ago and started to think what the time means which we have in life and how I wanted to fill that. I went through various of options and possible career paths and thought in this day and age I can be anything. I can see myself as many things, and I like many things, so what to choose? As I picked up painting and started to learn this new technique I saw all my dreams be able to visualize itself, to go from my mind onto the canvas or panel. I also saw options of versions of me, so if I could be anyone, could I paint myself a portrait of those individualities? And so, about a year ago, the project Vanitas was born. I challenged myself to make 9 portrait paintings that express the characteristics and interests of me in forms of timeless figures. And one painting to dictate the Theme; the still life.
The Vanitas still life paintings have been a classic throughout art history and have been a symbol of individuality and vanity and how temporarily everything is. The skull represents the end, the flower the growth, the book and walnuts the wisdom we gain, the candle the passing of the time, the glass the emptiness of things we do and the headphones stand for music and it’s expression of life. But off course you can see your own symbolism in it.
Like I said I started this a year ago as an adventure for myself. I had it all planned out and written in one of my notebooks. And look now, the entire world stands still and everyone is forced to think what really matters in life. Hope you can all give meaning to the right things.
I hope everyone is safe and doing well. These strange times give us time to think. We also need to adapt to the current situation and wrap our mind around the new reality. I see a bright future always and I think people’s creativity will shape the future to again a world where dreams can be visualized and then realized.
Het leven gaat snel, dus neem wat tijd om stil te staan en in te zien wat er waarde heeft.
We rennen overal achteraan in ons leven en volgen wat er op ons pad komt totdat we tot stilstand komen en we onszelf afvragen, wat gebeurt er eigenlijk allemaal?
Dat had ik een paar jaar terug en begon mezelf af te vragen wat tijd betekent die we hebben in ons leven en hoe we dit willen invullen. Ik ben door een aantal mogelijkheden gegaan als carrière en bedacht me, in deze tijd kan ik alles wel zijn. Ik kan mezelf zien als veel dingen en ik houd van veel dingen dus wat kies ik dan? Terwijl ik het schilderen oppakte en de nieuwe techniek me eigen maakte zag ik ik de mogelijkheid om mijn gedachtes naar beeld te vertalen, uit mijn hoofd op het doek. Tegelijk zag ik mezelf dus in verschillende rollen met eigen identiteiten en eigenschappen. Dus dacht ik, als ik mezelf in verschillende individualiteiten zie, kan ik mezelf dan ook weergeven in verschillende portretten die symbool staan voor die diverse identiteiten en eigenschappen.
Zo was het project Vanitas geboren. Ik daagde mezelf uit om 9 portretten te schilderen die elk een eigenschap en interesse weergaven. En een schilderij dat het thema aangaf, een stilleven.
Het Vanitas stilleven is door de historie een klassiek schilderij dat symbool staat voor ijdelheid, identiteit en vergankelijkheid. Het doodshoofd staat voor het einde, de bloem voor de groei, het boek en walnoten voor de wijsheid die we opdoen, de kaars voor de voortgang van tijd het glas voor de leegte van het aardse bestaan. De koptelefoon staat voor de muziek die een expressie is van het leven. Maar een ieder kan er zijn of haar eigen symboliek in zien.
Op dit moment staat het leven voor iedereen stil en zitten we in een vreemde en bijzondere tijd. De tijd geeft ons ook tijd om na denken, over hoe we ons moeten aanpassen aan de huidige tijd maar ook over wat we met onze tijd willen doen. Waar besteden we die aan? En wanneer heeft de tijd die je investeert als resultaat dat het iets tijdloos achterlaat?
